Monotonicity in Opaque Verbs

چکیده

Neither arbitrary horses, nor intentional lions, nor generic unicorns are animals, and would-be assistents do not have to be assistents.2 In fact, one may well wonder just what sort of objects the paraphrases in (0') are supposed to be about. Given their dubious ontological status, an analysis of (0) that can do without them ought to be preferrable to one along the lines of (0') – ceteris paribus. Such analyses have been developed, based on the observation3 that opaque verbs tend to express propositional attitudes (in a broad sense). Following them, instead of trying to make literal sense of (0'), it is more worthwhile to explore the (admittedly rough) paraphrases under (0") instead, thereby reducing the strangeness of (0) to an interaction of the lexical meaning of the opaque verb and the ordinary meaning of the indefinite as existentially quantifying over the extension of its head noun:4

Measuring compositionality in phrasal verbs

This paper demonstrates how to measure the compositionality of phrasal verbs using corpus frequencies from the BNC. This allows us to distinguish semantically transparent phrasal verbs (they lifted up their hats) from opaque ones (they summed up their feelings). Working by analogy to paradigmatic approaches to morphology (Moscoso del Prado Martín et al 2004), I use information theoretic terms t...

Morphological priming in German: the word is not enough (or is it?)

Studies across multiple languages show that overt morphological priming leads to a speed-up only for transparent derivations but not for opaque derivations. (2014) show comparable speed-ups for transparent and opaque derivations, and conclude that German behaves unlike other Indo-European languages and organizes its mental lexicon by mor...

Indexical Expressions in the Scope of Attitude Verbs

Given such a theory, it is natural to suggest that the proposition expressed by an utterance of natural language is also a sentence of a representation language. This leads to a straightforward account of the semantics of attitude verbs. However, this ki...
